Rose Water

Is it vain to love yourself?
I ask myself as I put on my makeup
Crossed-legged on my bed, my mirror propped up against my wall
I dig through my side table for mascara and lipstick

I can’t think of a better thing
and yet I still feel guilty saying it out loud
I light a candle
And watch the flame flicker in the breeze coming through my window
I love myself
I spray rose water on my skin, letting the mist settle into my pores

Maybe today I will believe it
